An Interview with Adem Tesfaye
Wood is an important part of music since many instruments are created from wood. Adem Tesfaye is a singer/songwriter originally from Madison, WI. He currently lives in New York City and plays the guitar. He currently has 4 albums out: Seattle, Madison, Soul Hip-Hip, and his upcoming CD.
What made you start music?
Well I have two uncles who are both musicians. I started when I was 12 or 13 and played violin. Then I switched to trumpet and drums. I picked up guitar when I was 26 years old because I could be self-sufficient and play without a band if necessary. I also have been a DJ since I was 12.
Why and when did you move to New York City?
I moved about 2 years ago mostly because there's a great music scene here. There's also a lot of great music coming through Seattle and paying venues, so that was my other choice.
Who are your musical inspirations?
That's a tough question because I have a lot of inspirations but I mostly listen to a lot of hip-hip, funk, soul. My favorite artists are: A Tribe Called Quest, De la soul, Bob Marley, Ben Parker, Amus Lee, James Brown, Clyde Stubberfield, Del tha funky homosapien, Jimi Hendrix, and Miles Davis. I could go on, but those are the biggest inspirations for me.
What are most of your songs about?
I sing mostly about self-realization and God. I grew up in a somewhat religious home, but my songs are more about spirituality than anything else. Most of my songs also emphasize the fact that life's a journey and that we should appreciate what we have.
Do you have a record deal?
Right now, I'm unsigned, so I guess I would be considered indie. I own my own record label called Pull a Straight Wreck LLC which I started at 22. I've made four albums now which are all live recordings. I'm a big fan of live recordings namely because it's cheaper, but it also sounds better, to me at least.
Where can we see you perform?
Well, right now I don't have a steady schedule in terms of performances, but you can check out my schedule at my myspace: http://www.myspace.com/ademtesfaye.
Anything else you want to add?
I just want to emphasize that for those that are looking to become musicians to be patient because it takes time to build relationships. A great band will stand the test of time, so it's worth it to be a little picky when you're forming your own group. And to reiterate, life's a journey, enjoy it while it lasts.
